Eddie Murphy’s ‘Hong Kong Phooey’ Test Footage Proves This Thing Almost Happened to Us

Alcon Entertainment

Not long ago, Eddie Murphy and a marginally talented director set out to make a live-action version of the classic cartoon ‘Hong Kong Phooey.’ This test footage is all that remains of that fateful journey.

Director Alex Zamm, whose film credits include such gems as the Carrot Top movie ‘Chairman of the Board’ (yes, that Carrot Top), ‘Tooth Fairy 2,’ and ‘Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2,’ was tasked with directing Eddie Murphy’s voice in a live-action ‘Hong Kong Phooey’ feature. You know, as in the crime-fighting, kung fu dog cartoon.

But then the movie just… stopped happening. All that’s left is this test footage posted at Badass Digest, which is about what you’d expect — bad mid-90s score, lame jokes that feel like rejects from the Poochie episode of ‘The Simpsons,’ Eddie Murphy doing his sassy Eddie Murphy voice (aka the “I like money” voice), a cartoon dog eating a toilet mint, and a real-life cat rolling its CGI eyes so hard that Robert Zemeckis just got a chill somewhere.

You can check out the footage below, which now merely exists as a reminder that this is a thing that almost happened to us, and we somehow (miraculously, narrowly) avoided it. Also included is Zamm’s test footage for a Marvin the Martian movie. So, yeah:
