When it comes to music, we know what we like, but is it good for us, especially when we’re behind the wheel?  A new study listening to certain types of music might affect how we drive.

First let’s start with volume.  The study recommends something in between 55 decibels (the volume of rainfall) and 65 decibels (the volume of a washing machine on spin cycle), about the same level as a normal conversation.

Next it’s tempo.  60 to 80 beats per minute (about the same as a normal resting heart rate) is the accepted standard.  If you’re building a playlist think:

‘Alone’ by Heart (66 bpm)

‘True Colors’ by Cyndi Lauper (70 bpm)

‘Woman’ by John Lennon (80 bpm)

What happens if you’re music is too loud or too fast?  According to the London Metropolitan University study:

Listening to music that is noisy, upbeat and increases your heart rate.

Confused.com used the study data to determine that “safe driving” playlist would include:

Coldplay

Norah Jones

The “dangerous driving” playlist would include:

The Black Eyed Peas

Fall Out Boy

Here’s to safe listening – and safe driving!
