CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL, S.D. (AP) — A landmark in the Black Hills being built in honor of Native Americans is trying to draw attention to a disease that afflicts many of them.

Crazy Horse Memorial will glow blue on Wednesday evening to mark World Diabetes Day, which is Thursday.

Admission will be free during the lighting from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

The Blue Monument Challenge awareness promotion encourages people to take part in diabetes education and testing programs.

The South Dakota Urban Indian Health clinics in Pierre and Sioux Falls and the Wagner Indian Health Services office will offer free diabetes tests to people on Thursday.

The American Diabetes Association says American Indians and Alaska Natives have the highest age-adjusted prevalence of diabetes among U.S. racial and ethnic groups.
