Coyotes’ Comeback Bid Falls Short In Tournament Loss To NDSU
FARGO, ND – North Dakota State led 9-1 after three innings and held on for an 11-8 win against South Dakota in an elimination game at the Summit League Softball Tournament Friday at Ellig Sports Complex.
The top-seeded Bison (31-16) advance to face No. 5 Western Illinois Saturday morning. The Coyotes close their season at 29-22.
Logan Moreland and Amanda Grable drove in four runs apiece to pace the Bison. Moreland hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning and added a two-run shot in the sixth. Grable had two-run singles in both the second and third innings.
USD left fielder Katie Cochran, who hit one home run during the regular season, homered in all three games during the tournament. She hit a grand slam in the fourth inning Friday that cut the Bison’s lead to 9-5. Cochran was 3-for-8 during the tournament with 10 RBIs.
Morgan Hancock closed the gap to 9-7 with a two-run shot in the fifth that chased Bison starter Krista Menke. Hancock also had two doubles on the day and was 5-for-10 during the tournament with four RBIs and four runs scored.
Moreland’s homer made it 11-7 in the sixth. Lindsey Boyd’s solo shot in the bottom of the inning made it 11-8. The Coyotes brought the tying run to the plate with no outs in the seventh, but Menke reentered and worked three consecutive outs to close the game.
South Dakota homered eight times and scored 23 runs in three tournament games, but came away with one win. Twenty-six free passes, including 10 issued by its staff Friday (8 walks, 2 HBP) were its undoing. Nine of the 26 free passes came around to score
