It will be a year before it's in use, but construction has begun on a new Sioux Falls Fire Rescue station in the northwest part of the city.

City and Fire Rescue officials say Station 11 will be located on a 1.5-acre lot at the intersection of North Valley View Road and West Maple Street, near the new George McGovern Middle School.

The 7,900-square-foot building will have a three-bay apparatus garage with support spaces, four sleeping rooms with restrooms (remember, firefighters work a 24-hour shift), a physical training area, laundry, a living room, offices and Battalion Chief headquarters.

Fire Rescue Chief Jim Sideras says 15 firefighters will be hired, and Station 11 will be staffed and operational in the spring of 2015.
