Classic Cars, Disney Star Draw Thousands to Sioux Falls Convention Center for Winterfest of Wheels
The 6th annual Winterfest of Wheels indoor car show at the Sioux Falls Convention Center wraps up today (Sunday February 9) from 10-4 on what may be the biggest weekend in their history.
Over 130 vehicles fill the Convention Center floor this year. There are cars you’ve seen in magazines, award winning cars, cars that maybe only friends of the owners have seen, and the vehicles are different every year. It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of the founders of the show, Dave and Karen Leisinger, the sponsors, and the hundred or so volunteers that help make this such a successful show and fundraiser for Cure Kids Cancer at Sanford Children’s Hospital in Sioux Falls. Last year alone, Winterfest of Wheels donated over $25,000 to the charity!
Each year Winterfest of Wheels also brings in a celebrity guest to sign autographs and meet their fans. Saturday was actress Peyton List, who plays Emma Ross on Disney TV‘s ‘Jessie’.
List signed autographs at Winterfest from 1-4pm and 6-8pm Saturday. I was side stage for part of the session talking to Winterfest organizers and got a chance to watch her interact with the thousands of families that in some cases waited a couple of hours to get a chance to meet her and get a photo with her. She engaged every single child and parent that approached with a smile and a genuine interest in them. I searched social media afterwards and listened to families as they finished and every one of them seemed to be as impressed with the 15-year old actress as I was.
And when I say there was a line to meet her, I mean it! I took this in the hallway of teh Convention Center about an hour into her first autograph session:
The line stretched from the doors of the Arena to the entrance of the new Events Center as families waited to meet List. What was just as impressive was that instead of using the break between sessions to go back to her hotel room, relax and have some dinner, List went to Sanford Children’s Hospital to meet some of the in-patient kids who weren’t able to leave the castle to go to meet her.
Friday night, organizers said the crowds were larger than last year for the car show and music from Sioux Falls’ Big Red Rawkit Riot as well. The show concludes today from 10-4 at the Convention Center. Admission is $9 with children 12 and under admitted free. There’s plenty for the whole family to see with kids activities, the ‘Ditch Your Man Room’ with over 30 vendors (guys, maybe a Valentines idea there??), vendors, seminars and ALL those cool vehicles! And all proceeds benefit Cure Kids Cancer.
