City officials in Sioux Falls are estimating the city's population as of December 31, 2012 at 158,800. That shows an increase of 2,500 over the year before, an increase of 1.6 percent.

Jeff Schmitt, the city's chief planning and building official, says there are many factors in the city's steady growth, including employment increases, quality parks and schools, low crime rates and an excellent transportation network.

Schmitt says Sioux Falls' population has grown by more than 24,000 in the past ten years.

He says the growth in the last five years has been 0.97, while the increase over the past decade has been 1.67 percent.
