‘Cinderella’ Chooses Helena Bonham Carter as the Fairy Godmother
THR reports that Helena Bonham Carter is the latest to join the cast of Kenneth Branagh's take on 'Cinderella' for Disney. The actress is best known for her ability to play dark and quirky roles -- last year she starred in 'Les Miserables,' and in 'Dark Shadows' for her husband, director Tim Burton. She's also rather familiar with the wonderful world of Disney, having starred in 'Alice in Wonderland' and the upcoming 'Lone Ranger' flick -- which reunites her with 'Alice' star Johnny Depp.
Bonham Carter will be playing a beefed-up role of the fairy godmother from the classic tale. In Branagh's version, she disguises herself as a lowly beggar who quietly keeps an eye out for Cinderella before revealing her true self in the young woman's desperate time of need. This sounds like pretty obvious casting, as the role appears to call for someone who can be both dark and whimsical -- Bonham Carter's wheelhouse.
'Cinderella' stars Lily James in the title role, Richard Madden ('Game of Thrones') as Prince Charming, Cate Blanchett as the wicked stepmother, and Holliday Grainger ('The Borgias') and Sophie McShera ('Downton Abbey') as the stepsisters. The film is scheduled to be released sometime in 2014.
