Brookings Health System: State Staff Go to Sioux Falls
BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) — The CEO of the Brookings Health System says more than 3,000 state employees have to get medical care in Sioux Falls because the state plan effectively cuts out the Brookings hospital.
Jason Merkley sought support from the City Council this week in his effort to negotiate a solution with the state.
The Brookings Register reports that Brookings Health is not a "Tier 1 provider" in the state employee plan, which means it's much cheaper for them to go to Avera, Sanford or the Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital.
Merkley says Brookings has 3,000 to 3,500 state employees, so it hits the city-owned hospital and sends more revenue to Sioux Falls when people go there.
The Register reports that a November ballot measure would eliminate the restrictions.
