The national Weather Service Issued a Flash Flood Warning for parts of Colorado early Thursday morning.

In the hours that followed, severe flooding in Jamestown in Colorado’s Boulder County killed one person, authorities said early Thursday morning.

The person died after being trapped in a collapsed structure, said Gabbie Boerkircher, spokeswoman for the county.

There were multiple structures that have collapsed due to heavy rains, authorities said. The exact number of homes was unknown as a rock slide in the area hampered rescue operations.

Emergency agencies had also received reports of people being trapped inside and on top of their cars.

According to NBC News in Boulder, a spokeswoman for Boulder Police and Fire Department said water levels were as high as first-floor windows in some parts of the city. Dive teams had been dispatched after cars were spotted floating.

UPDATE: 9/13/13: Heavy rains sent walls of water crashing down mountainsides Thursday in Colorado, cutting off remote towns, forcing the state’s largest university to close and leaving at least three people dead across a rugged landscape that included areas blackened by recent wildfires.

Boulder County appeared to be hardest hit. Sheriff Joe Pelle said the town of Lyons was completely cut off because of flooded roads, and residents were huddling together on higher ground. Although everyone was believed to be safe, the deluge was expected to continue into Friday.
