Augustana Earns Sixth Seed In Regional Tournament, Will Play Top Seed Arkansas Tech
Augustana is making its second NCAA Baseball Tournament appearance in school history. The Vikings last qualified for the national tournament in 2011.
The regional tournament will be played May 15-18 on the campus of Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, Ark.
Augustana earned an automatic bid to the Central Region Tournament by winning the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament Championship on Saturday. The Vikings defeated Winona State in the championship game, going 4-0 in the tournament, to claim its first tournament title since joining the league in 2009.
For the second straight season, Augustana baseball set a program record for wins in a season and will carry a 40-14 record into the national tournament.
Arkansas Tech is 42-10 on the season and was the regular season champion of the Great American Conference. The Wonder Boys went 1-2 at the GAC tournament losing their opening round game 6-3 to Ouachita Baptist. Arkansas Tech rebounded with a 16-3 win over Southwestern Oklahoma before being eliminated by eventual champion Southern Arkansas 6-5. Southern Arkansas went on to win the GAC Tournament Championship to earn the conference’s automatic bid.
Southern Arkansas earned the No. 2 seed, followed by Minnesota State at No. 3, Emporia State at No. 4 and Arkansas-Monticello at No. 5.
