AMC’s ‘Low Winter Sun’: Canceled, or “Not to Be Underestimated”?

AMC Low Winter Sun Canceled Renewed Season 2
AMC

Earlier today saw AMC’s ‘Hell on Wheels‘ earning a somewhat surprising season 4 pickup with additional episodes, leaving the oft-maligned ‘Low Winter Sun‘ as the last of AMC’s scripted offerings without its future decided. Even the dank corruption drama’s stars have taken to trashing the low-rated drama, but how long until AMC makes a decision on the series’ future?

Speaking at a recent symposium, AMC Networks CEO Josh Sapan offered that advances in modern DVR and viewership evaluation technology have made it (at least for the moment) impossible to determine if ‘Low Winter Sun’ could perhaps rise in awareness during its off season, becoming a larger hit than when the first run aired on AMC. Social media and on-demand viewing might also help grow the audience for ‘Low Winter Sun’ similar to ‘Breaking Bad‘s relatively low early season ratings, compared with its powerhouse finale.

Said Sapan of ‘Low Winter Sun”s chances of remaining an AMC property for another season:

There is, as a consequence of the technology, this new phenomenon that really does seem to be occurring. We have to be very careful about not being precipitous in our judgment of TV shows as to whether they can build a head of steam. So as it relates to ‘Low Winter Sun,’ we’re evaluating.

I thought that the last few episodes were quite different and better and more urgent than the first part of the season. I think the backdrop is sort of interesting. We’ll have to evaluate exactly what we do and how much benefit the mid-season/off-season effect can be. But it’s not to be underestimated.

AMC has yet to make an official declaration on the fate of the Mark Strong-led crime drama, whose premiere drew a modest 2.5 million viewers, but dwindled to the hundreds of thousands by the finale. For those unfamiliar, ‘Low Winter Sun’ was adapted from a 2006 UK miniseries (also featuring Mark Strong) and written and executive produced by Chris Mundy (‘Criminal Minds’). The AMC drama offered a contemporary story of murder, deception, revenge and corruption that started with the murder of a cop by Detroit detective Frank Agnew, and also stars Lennie James (‘The Walking Dead’), James Ransone, Ruben Santiago-Hudson (‘Castle‘), Sprague Grayden (’24′) and Athena Karkanis (‘The Transporter’).

Well, what say you? Do you think ‘Low Winter Sun’ has a shot at renewal, based on Sapan’s comments? Would you want to see the dreary AMC drama given another run of episodes to improve?
